About
Dr. Ah Lam Lee’s research bridges robotics and public health, with a focus on sensor-based pose estimation and human-centered design. In robotics, Dr. Lee developed a compact 3D pose estimation algorithm for humanoid robots using inertial sensors—including a 3D accelerometer and three 1D gyroscopes—processed via an extended Kalman filter on a low-cost DSP. This work, published in 2008 and 2010, laid the foundation for efficient, real-time attitude estimation in humanoid platforms, earning a combined 13 citations and demonstrating early impact in the field. More recently, Dr. Lee has addressed critical gaps in occupational safety through the development of Korean representative headforms for filtering facepiece respirator (FFR) testing. By directly measuring 5,110 individuals and analyzing 3D scans of 2,044 subjects, this 2023 study ensures that respirator fit testing reflects the actual head characteristics of the Korean population, directly improving FFR effectiveness. This work highlights Dr. Lee’s ability to translate engineering principles into practical, population-specific solutions.
