da Vinci 5

The da Vinci 5 (dV5) is Intuitive Surgical's latest-generation robotic-assisted surgery (RAS) platform, FDA-authorized in March 2024 and CE-marked in July 2025. It is a teleoperated surgical system in which a surgeon at a console directly controls all instrument movements in real time — the system explicitly prevents autonomous movement and requires direct surgeon control for every maneuver. Key hardware advances over the da Vinci Xi include 10,000x more computing power, 3D force feedback from instrument tip to hand controller, 7-degree-of-freedom wristed instruments, and integrated simulation software. Priced at $1.8–$2.5 million (or via per-procedure/lease models), over 1,400 systems have been installed across 10+ countries, supporting 380,000+ patients. Research groups are actively exploring autonomous sub-tasks (tissue retraction, needle handling, knot-tying) using the dVRK research platform, but these remain experimental and are not part of the clinical product.
