Abstract

Volume 1: General Principles (Pp. 1328; Price: $249, hardcover) The creation of a replacement reference textbook for Plastic Surgery is a huge task. The historical significance of what has become “The Bible of Plastic Surgery” under previous editors Converse followed by McCarthy creates an enviable and challenging role to fill. It is admirable to even think one could accomplish such a task. It is a compliment to new editor Stephen Mathes to see the depth and number of world expert contributors to this new edition. Despite this almost unachievable goal, the first volume reaches its mark. There is a clear attempt in this edition to influence the thinking and decision processes of plastic surgeons rather than only present techniques and procedures available for problem solving. Chapters now address the principles and management of plastic surgery issues. In fact, the first chapter describes plastic surgery as the problem-solving specialty. This is a welcome adaptation from past plastic surgery texts. As plastic surgery expands into futuristic areas and roles, this volume should stay relevant not only because of its discussion chapters but also because it presents philosophical and thoughtful approaches to problem solving. Volume 1 has been expanded to include discussions of ethics in plastic surgery, liability issues affecting plastic surgery, management of complex wound issues, and a futuristic view of robotic plastic surgery, fetal surgery, and tissue engineering. Important chapters on the psychological aspects of plastic surgery and endoscopic surgery demonstrate the depth of this volume in addressing a complete plastic surgical practice. It is safe to say this edition and, specifically, this volume will become a mainstay for plastic surgery residents as well as trainees of many specialties. A plastic surgeon whose practice is 100 percent reconstructive or 100 percent aesthetic will benefit from this volume. The principles and management presentations are right on target and reflect current and relevant discussions for today’s successful practice. While the chapters necessarily reflect the authors’ opinions and views on a topic, other views are also presented, thereby creating a complete dialogue on the topics covered. I was impressed that the most difficult goal of replacing the 1990 edition of Plastic Surgery was accomplished. Neal Reisman, M.D., J.D.Figure
