Abstract
Major areas of research currently under investigation in the development of safe and reliable robots are summarized. These areas include human factors issues, the design of the robot itself, systems engineering issues and standards development. It is concluded that much more research needs to be done in preparation for more sophisticated robot applications.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">></ETX>
