Robotic surgery: training, competence assessment and credentialing

Abstract
As a topical domain, robotic surgery is a fast moving area of both research and innovation, but there seems to be a dearth of information about training and curricula. Looking at training and future practice for robotic surgery, the authors examine the current situation but also consider potential future directions in terms of mandatory curricula (for multiple specialties) and assessment of competence. The article also covers some general areas of implementation and learning curves for new technologies. An international consensus on robotic surgical training is required to guarantee regulated uptake of this expanding area of innovation.
