FPGA-based Intruder Detection Systems for Aerial Robots

With so many micro controllers implemented in security-based systems today, an FPGA-based approach provides several advantages over traditional microcontroller-based systems, including higher processing speeds, greater flexibility, and reduced power consumption. Additionally, using FPGAs allows for easy customization and reconfiguration of the system to suit specific security needs, making it highly adaptable and scalable. Combining these features provides a highly effective security system for various applications, from home to industrial security. In this research, we have demonstrated Basys-3 FPGA boards for developing intruder detection systems. This project further illustrates using a Basys-3 FPGA board to communicate with a Personal Computer (PC) to control a DJI Tello EDU drone. The FPGA board is a controller and sends commands to the PC via a UART Serial connection at a baud rate of 9600 bits-per-second (bps). Once the command, an ASCII character, has been received by the PC, it is decoded and transmitted to the Tello EDU Drone via a Wi-Fi connection of 2.4GHz in a different programming language to which the Tello EDU Drone can interpret. The project was verified by running several trials as an intruder detection system and with the Tello EDU Drone in different environments and at different battery levels.
