About

Dr. Yuk Him Tam is a pioneering pediatric urologist whose research focuses on advancing minimally invasive surgical techniques for congenital urological conditions in children. His major contributions center on comparing robot-assisted laparoscopic pyeloplasty (RALP) with traditional laparoscopic pyeloplasty (LP) for treating ureteropelvic junction obstruction, demonstrating that robotic approaches offer superior outcomes even in the youngest patients. His landmark 2018 study, cited 23 times, was among the first to document the transition from LP to RALP in both primary and reoperative repairs, while his 2021 work (21 citations) extended these findings specifically to infants under 12 months, establishing safety and efficacy in this vulnerable population. Dr. Tam’s early experience papers from 2010 and 2011 (21 and 15 citations respectively) laid foundational evidence for robotic-assisted reconstructive operations and bilateral intravesical ureteral reimplantation for vesicoureteral reflux. More recently, his innovative combined approach integrating RALP with flexible endoscopy for concurrent UPJ obstruction and calyceal stones (2022) has expanded treatment possibilities for complex pediatric cases. His work has fundamentally shaped modern pediatric urological practice, proving that robotic technology can achieve excellent outcomes with minimal invasiveness in children.
