About
Young Ho Choi is a South Korean thoracic surgeon and researcher whose work has significantly advanced minimally invasive surgical techniques for thoracic disease. His research focuses primarily on robotic surgery, video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), and surgical innovation, with a particular emphasis on reducing patient trauma through single-site and uniportal approaches. Choi's most impactful contribution is his development and refinement of robotic single-site thymectomy via the subxiphoid approach, building on earlier transthoracic techniques using the da Vinci Single-Site™ platform. This work, which has accumulated 29 citations, represents a meaningful step forward in thymic surgery, offering patients a less invasive alternative with demonstrated clinical outcomes. His research into three-dimensional video systems for surgical training has also contributed to improving how surgeons learn and perform uniportal thoracoscopic procedures, recognizing that depth perception is critical to endoscopic surgical performance. More broadly, Choi has documented Korea's emergence as a leader in minimally invasive thoracic surgery, chronicling a field-wide shift away from open resection toward less invasive approaches. His body of work reflects a consistent commitment to refining technique, improving training methodology, and expanding the frontier of what minimally invasive thoracic surgery can achieve.
