Yoonsun Jin’s research lies at the intersection of human-robot interaction (HRI), user experience, and service technology, with a particular focus on how robotic design and social roles shape user acceptance and satisfaction. Her work on humanoid-based healthcare robots demonstrated that user satisfaction is significantly influenced by the quality of human-robot interaction, offering early evidence for the importance of social presence in non-face-to-face service contexts. In a pioneering empirical study on the Uncanny Valley effect, Jin examined how a robot’s category (humanoid vs. pet-like) and role (service vs. companion) interact with individual user factors—such as personality and prior experience—to modulate eeriness and likability. This work is among the first to systematically test whether pet-like robots also trigger the Uncanny Valley and to show that the effect’s shape shifts depending on the robot’s intended function.
