About

Yi-Lin Chang is a pioneering breast surgeon whose work centers on advancing minimally invasive and patient-centered techniques in oncologic breast surgery. Her research focuses on preserving quality of life after breast cancer treatment, particularly through nipple-sparing mastectomy (NSM) and innovative approaches to implantable venous access. In a landmark 2023 study analyzing 460 NSM cases, Chang systematically identified factors affecting nipple and skin sensation—including surgical approach, patient age, and implant type—providing the first large-scale evidence to guide patient counseling and technique selection. This work, cited 12 times, has become a reference for surgeons seeking to optimize sensory outcomes. More recently, Chang introduced a scarless totally implantable venous access port (TIVAP) technique for breast cancer patients undergoing systemic therapy. Her 2024 study demonstrated that placing the port in a hidden location eliminates visible chest scars, with a steep learning curve and high patient satisfaction. With over 125 cases reported, this innovation directly addresses the cosmetic concerns of patients who undergo minimally invasive breast surgery. Chang’s contributions are reshaping surgical practice by proving that oncologic safety and aesthetic excellence can coexist, earning her recognition as a leader in functional and scarless breast surgery.
