About

Dr. Yan-You Chen has pioneered the integration of cloud computing with human-robot interaction, particularly for assistive technologies serving aging populations. His landmark 2011 paper, "Human-robot interaction based on cloud computing infrastructure for senior companion," introduced the Senior Companion Robot System (SCRS), a groundbreaking framework that leverages cloud-based services to enable remote management and intelligent interaction for elderly care. This work, with 13 citations, established a foundational architecture for offloading computational tasks from physical robots to cloud servers, dramatically enhancing the capabilities and affordability of companion robots. Chen’s major contribution lies in demonstrating how cloud infrastructure can provide scalable, real-time processing for speech recognition, behavior analysis, and adaptive responses—all critical for meaningful human-robot interaction. By proposing dual cloud services for both robot-side processing and web-based user management, he addressed key challenges in deploying autonomous systems for vulnerable populations. His research has influenced subsequent work in cloud robotics, telepresence, and ambient assisted living, positioning him as a forward-thinking contributor to the intersection of distributed computing and socially assistive robotics. Chen’s work continues to inspire scalable, human-centered robotic solutions for an aging society.
