Vivek Datta is a pioneering surgical researcher whose work has fundamentally shaped our understanding of how surgeons acquire proficiency with robotic systems. His research centers on the learning curve in robotic-assisted surgery, the ergonomics of minimally invasive procedures, and the objective assessment of surgical skill. Datta’s most influential contribution is his landmark 2004 study, “Qualitative and quantitative analysis of the learning curve of a simulated surgical task on the da Vinci system,” which has garnered 173 citations and remains a foundational reference in surgical education. This work provided the first rigorous, evidence-based framework for measuring how surgeons progress from novice to expert when using the da Vinci surgical robot.
