About
Dr. Virginia Vargiu is a leading gynecologic surgeon whose research focuses on advancing minimally invasive techniques for endometriosis and gynecologic cancers. Her landmark 2020 case-control study (46 citations) pioneered the use of real-time near-infrared imaging with indocyanine green during robotic surgery, dramatically improving the detection of hidden endometriosis implants that conventional two-dimensional cameras miss. This work has transformed surgical precision in a disease affecting millions. Dr. Vargiu has also systematically evaluated sentinel lymph node detection in endometrial cancer, with her 2021 meta-analysis (31 citations) establishing critical safety benchmarks for this minimally invasive approach. Her ten-year institutional experience with robotic surgery for recurrent gynecologic cancers demonstrates sustained excellence in managing complex cases. Most recently, her MIRaGE project (2025) addresses the growing challenge of recurrent endometrial cancer, where secondary cytoreductive surgery is vital. With over 90 combined citations across her most influential works, Dr. Vargiu continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in robotic gynecologic oncology, offering patients less invasive options even in advanced disease stages.
