V. K. Pearson is a leading astrobiologist and geochemist whose research bridges the volcanic landscapes of early Earth with the icy worlds of the outer Solar System. Her work centers on understanding how volcanic environments—both ancient and extraterrestrial—could have fostered the emergence of life. Pearson’s most influential contribution is her landmark 2010 study of ~3.5-billion-year-old volcaniclastic rocks from the Pilbara, Australia. This work, cited over 80 times, demonstrated that these ancient volcanic sediments provided stable, nutrient-rich habitats for early microbial life, establishing a critical terrestrial analogue for similar environments on Mars.
