About
Surinder Bazaz is a pioneering cardiac surgeon whose work has advanced minimally invasive mitral valve surgery. In a landmark study spanning 1997 to 2000, Bazaz and his team performed mitral valve surgery on 221 patients through a mini-thoracotomy, utilizing a port-access endovascular cardiopulmonary bypass system in 38 cases and a transthoracic clamp in 183. For 120 of these patients, exposure of the mitral valve was enhanced by an endoscope attached to a voice-controlled robotic arm, demonstrating the feasibility of integrating robotic assistance into complex cardiac operations.
