About
Dr. Silvana Perretta is a pioneering figure at the intersection of surgery, robotics, and artificial intelligence, with a career dedicated to redefining how surgical innovation is taught and practiced. Her research focuses on developing and democratizing advanced robotic platforms for flexible endoscopy and minimally invasive procedures, as well as establishing standardized, evidence-based training curricula for the next generation of surgeons. A major contribution is her work on single-operator fully robotic colorectal endoscopic submucosal dissection, demonstrating the feasibility of complex procedures without a second surgeon. She also critically evaluated human-machine interfaces, showing that joystick controls are unsuitable for robotized endoscopes in NOTES. With over 170 citations across her most influential works, Dr. Perretta’s impact is further solidified by her leadership of the European Robotic Surgery Consensus (ERSC), which aims to create a pan-European standardized training curriculum for gastrointestinal surgery trainees. She also developed the innovative "Business Engineering Surgical Technologies (BEST)" teaching method, designed to incubate talent for surgical innovation. Her work is essential reading for anyone interested in the future of digital surgery and robotic education.
