About
Sigmar Stelzner is a leading surgical anatomist whose work bridges the gap between classical anatomical description and modern oncologic surgery. His primary research focuses on the fascial planes of the abdomen, particularly as they apply to complete mesocolic excision (CME) for right hemicolectomy. In his landmark 2022 study, which has garnered 24 citations, Stelzner revisited the retrocolic fascial system to clarify the optimal surgical dissection planes for preserving the mesocolic envelope during CME. By reinterpreting the eponyms of Toldt, Gerota, Fredet, and Treitz through both macroscopic and microscopic anatomical studies, he provided a definitive anatomical rationale for achieving intact fascial integrity—a cornerstone of improved oncologic outcomes. More recently, Stelzner has ventured into intraoperative imaging innovation.
