Shinichi Kinami is a leading figure in gastric cancer surgery, whose work has fundamentally shaped how surgeons approach early-stage disease. His primary research focuses on precision surgical techniques, lymph-node dissection, and the advancement of minimally invasive and robotic procedures for upper gastrointestinal cancers. Kinami’s most influential contribution is his landmark 2019 study on precision surgical approaches with lymph-node dissection in early gastric cancer, which has garnered 51 citations. This work established that while lymph-node metastasis is the gravest prognostic factor, occurring in about 10% of cases, two-thirds of patients can be accurately diagnosed as node-negative preoperatively, enabling less invasive tumor resection via endoscopy. He has also been a pioneer in local gastric resection methods, exploring laparoscopic and endoscopic techniques to preserve stomach function and prevent postoperative symptoms. More recently, Kinami has contributed to the future of the field through a narrative review on robotic surgery in upper GI oncology, highlighting the advantages of precision and 3D visualization. His insights into nationwide trends in gastrectomy procedures in Japan, as well as a rare case of multidisciplinary treatment for cervical esophageal adenocarcinoma, further underscore his commitment to advancing surgical oncology.
