About

Dr. Sara Mastrovito is a pioneering gynecologic surgeon at the forefront of robotic-assisted surgery, with a primary focus on minimally invasive treatments for pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and urogynaecological disorders. Her most impactful contributions center on validating the novel Hugo™ RAS system (Medtronic) for complex gynecologic procedures. In landmark studies, she performed the first nerve-sparing sacral colpopexy using this platform and demonstrated its feasibility, safety, and efficacy in the largest European series to date (60 cases), with perioperative outcomes comparable to established robotic systems. Dr. Mastrovito also introduced combined robotic sacrocolpopexy plus ventral rectopexy for multicompartment prolapse, expanding surgical options for patients with complex pelvic floor dysfunction. Her work on robotic docking time using cumulative summation (CUSUM) analysis has provided objective evidence for the learning curve, helping to standardize training for new robotic platforms. With over 90 cumulative citations since 2023, her research at Fondazione Policlinico Universitario A. Gemelli in Rome is shaping the adoption of next-generation robotics in gynecology. She has also critically evaluated the role of vaginal hysterectomy, advocating for evidence-based surgical choices that balance cost-effectiveness with technological innovation.
