About
Riccardo Brachet Contul is a pioneering Italian surgeon whose work has significantly advanced the fields of bariatric and minimally invasive colorectal surgery. A key figure in the adoption of robotic technology, his 2006 study on laparoscopic gastric bypass using the Da Vinci Robotic System (40 citations) stands as a foundational contribution, demonstrating the early feasibility and safety of robotic assistance in complex metabolic procedures. This work, alongside his extensive personal experience with 250 laparoscopic gastric bypasses (2007), helped establish best practices and refine surgical techniques for treating morbid obesity, a critical health challenge in Italy. More recently, Brachet Contul has focused on standardizing oncologic outcomes, notably through the SICE network’s CoDIG 2 study (2024). This prospective analysis tackles the debated extent of lymphadenectomy in right colon cancer, aiming to harmonize Italian surgical approaches with the rigorous D3 dissection standards seen in Japan. With a career bridging robotic innovation and evidence-based oncologic surgery, his contributions continue to shape safer, more effective procedures for patients worldwide.
