Olaf Suess is a pioneering neurosurgeon whose work has advanced the precision and safety of spinal and cranial surgery through the integration of image-guided navigation. His primary research focuses on the development and clinical validation of electromagnetic navigation systems, addressing the critical challenge of intraoperative anatomical shifts. Suess’s landmark 2001 study on intracranial image-guided neurosurgery (53 citations) demonstrated the clinical utility of a new electromagnetic system, establishing a foundation for non-line-of-sight tracking in the operating room. He further advanced spinal surgery with his contributions to the European multicenter trial on guided oblique lumbar interbody fusion (GO-LIF), a technique designed to circumvent complications associated with pedicle screw fixation. Notably, his work on real-time tracking of vertebral body movement using implantable microsensors (2006) directly tackled the problem of spinal mobility during surgery, proposing a solution to maintain navigational accuracy despite patient manipulation.
