Nillan Nimal is pioneering the next frontier of fetal surgery through the development of ultra-minimally invasive robotic tools. His research centers on continuum robotics and surgical simulation for in-utero procedures, specifically targeting Open Spina Bifida (OSB) repair. Nimal’s most notable contribution is the design of a 2mm diameter continuum robot tool—one of the thinnest ever conceived for fetal suturing—enabling surgeons to access the developing fetus through the uterus with unprecedented precision and minimal trauma. This work addresses a critical bottleneck in translating robotic fetal surgery to clinical practice. Additionally, he has developed a virtual training simulator for the Da Vinci Xi platform, allowing surgeons to practice complex in-utero OSB repairs in a risk-free environment.
