About

Naoaki Yamanaka is a pioneering researcher at the forefront of optical networking, cloud/edge computing, and AI-driven industrial automation. His work fundamentally addresses the challenge of seamlessly integrating distributed compute resources with dynamic, high-performance optical transport networks to enable next-generation applications. Yamanaka’s major contributions include the first-ever demonstration of geographically unconstrained remote control of an industrial robot over SDN-based optical transport networks, proving that cloud/edge computing can dramatically improve robotic controllability for tasks like surface blending. He has also proposed novel architectures for application-triggered, automatic resource coordination across inter/intra data center networks, and more recently, a disaggregated computing access network using hollow-core fiber to serve as an AI platform for the dynamic Internet of Things (IoT). His research has been recognized with multiple invited talks and has garnered over 29 citations across his most-cited works, establishing him as a key innovator in building trustworthy, orchestrated network infrastructures—such as the PROnet testbed—that support critical industrial applications like ROS-based robotics. Yamanaka’s vision is shaping the future of AIoT, where intelligent networks autonomously adapt to the movements of self-driving vehicles and robots.
