About
Nader Rifai is a leading figure in cardiovascular biomarker research, whose work has fundamentally shaped our understanding of inflammation and heart disease. His major contributions center on the clinical utility of soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1) and other inflammatory markers in predicting cardiovascular risk. In his highly cited 2006 study from the landmark PROVE IT-TIMI 22 trial, Rifai demonstrated that elevated levels of sICAM-1 are independently associated with a higher long-term risk of clinical cardiovascular events in patients with prior acute coronary syndrome. Crucially, he also showed that intensive statin therapy significantly reduces these levels, linking a specific inflammatory pathway to a therapeutic benefit. This work, with over 34 citations, helped solidify the role of adhesion molecules as critical mediators of atherogenesis and as potential therapeutic targets. Beyond this, Rifai has been instrumental in the development and validation of high-sensitivity assays for C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), further cementing his legacy as a pioneer in translating complex immunobiology into practical, life-saving clinical tools for risk stratification.
