About

Dr. Martial Ouendo is a pioneering neurosurgeon whose research focuses on advancing stereotactic and functional neurosurgery for movement disorders, particularly Parkinson’s disease and complex tremors. His most influential work, “Asleep Robot-Assisted Surgery for the Implantation of Subthalamic Electrodes Provides the Same Clinical Improvement and Therapeutic Window as Awake Surgery” (2017, 43 citations), demonstrated that robot-assisted deep brain stimulation (DBS) performed under general anesthesia achieves equivalent clinical outcomes to traditional awake surgery. This finding has significant implications for patient comfort and surgical accessibility, challenging long-standing practices in DBS implantation. More recently, Dr. Ouendo has been at the forefront of integrating stereotactic robot-assisted MRI-guided laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) for tremor management. His 2023 study on LITT thalamotomy for medically intractable Parkinson’s disease tremor, and his 2024 pilot study on Holmes tremor—a notoriously difficult-to-treat condition—highlight his commitment to developing minimally invasive, ablative alternatives for patients who are not candidates for DBS. By combining robotic precision with thermal ablation, Dr. Ouendo is expanding the therapeutic arsenal for movement disorders, offering new hope for improved quality of life in patients with refractory tremors.
