About

Dr. Mar Iglesias is a leading surgical oncologist whose work has fundamentally reshaped the surgical management of pancreatic cancer. Her primary research focuses on the oncological safety and efficacy of minimally invasive surgical techniques, particularly for pancreatic malignancies. Dr. Iglesias is best known as the principal investigator of the landmark DIPLOMA trial, an international randomised non-inferiority study that directly compared minimally invasive distal pancreatectomy (MIDP) to open surgery for resectable pancreatic cancer. This pivotal work, published in 2023 and already accumulating over 120 citations, provided the first high-level evidence that MIDP is a safe and oncologically sound alternative, challenging long-held surgical dogmas. Beyond this trial, her contributions have helped define modern standards for pancreatic surgery, balancing technical innovation with rigorous patient outcomes. Dr. Iglesias’s research has not only influenced clinical guidelines but has also empowered a new generation of surgeons to adopt minimally invasive approaches with confidence, ultimately improving recovery and quality of life for patients facing this challenging disease.
