About

Dr. Makio Shozu is a distinguished Japanese gynecologic oncologist whose research focuses on hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC) syndrome, risk-reducing surgeries, and the early detection of gynecologic malignancies. His most cited work, "Serous Tubal Intraepithelial Carcinoma in a Japanese Woman with a Deleterious BRCA1 Mutation" (2014, 3 citations), is a landmark case report that demonstrated the presence of serous tubal intraepithelial carcinoma (STIC) in a Japanese BRCA1 mutation carrier undergoing risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy (RRSO). This study provided critical evidence that RRSO can detect early-stage cancers in Japanese women, challenging the assumption that such preventive surgeries are unnecessary in this population. Dr. Shozu’s research has been instrumental in establishing the efficacy of RRSO for reducing future cancer risk in Japanese HBOC patients, a procedure rarely performed in Japan at the time. His work has helped bridge the gap between Western and Japanese clinical practices, influencing national guidelines for hereditary cancer management. By highlighting the importance of prophylactic surgery and early detection, Dr. Shozu has made a lasting impact on the care of women with BRCA mutations in Japan, paving the way for more widespread adoption of risk-reducing strategies.
