About

Luca Luzzi is a prominent thoracic surgeon and clinical researcher whose work has fundamentally advanced the field of minimally invasive and robotic-assisted thoracic surgery. His research spans robotic surgery for lung cancer, thymic tumors, mediastinal pathology, and pediatric applications, establishing him as a leading voice in the transition from conventional open procedures to cutting-edge minimally invasive techniques. Luzzi's most celebrated contribution is his leadership of the ROMAN Study (2021, 94 citations), the first prospective international randomized controlled trial comparing robotic and video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for early-stage lung cancer — a landmark achievement that set a new evidence standard for the field. He further reinforced these findings through a monocentric prospective randomized trial comparing robotic and VATS lobectomy (2023, 35 citations). His investigations into robotic thymectomy, including a large national multicenter study, have clarified outcomes in thymic tumor management where evidence was previously sparse. Notably, he has also pushed boundaries in pediatric robotic surgery and pioneered innovative combined robotic procedures. With over 200 cumulative citations and contributions ranging from surgical technique development to learning curve analysis, Luzzi's work continues to shape the evolution of modern thoracic surgical practice.
