About
Liliane Pintelon is a prominent researcher whose work spans maintenance engineering and, more recently, the safety and adoption of collaborative robot (cobot) systems within human-robot collaboration (HRC). Originally recognized for her contributions to industrial maintenance strategy — including a critically acclaimed 1999 case study on Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM) that continues to inform practical maintenance decisions — Pintelon has since emerged as a leading voice in cobot safety research. Her most-cited work, a 2020 review of the ISO 15066 standard (113 citations), rigorously examines how hazard analysis and risk assessment frameworks can better assure safety in collaborative workspaces. Subsequent studies have expanded this foundation through system-wide risk identification (92 citations), novel methodologies combining FMEA and PRAT, and STPA-based safety analyses. A recurring theme in her research is the argument that cobot safety must be understood as a socio-technical, system-wide challenge — not merely a technological one — a perspective she connects directly to the persistently low industrial adoption rates of cobots. Her 2024 vision paper further advocates for balancing robotic performance with worker well-being, reflecting her enduring commitment to human-centered industrial innovation.
