Le Qiao is a planetary geologist whose research focuses on the geological evolution of the Moon, with particular expertise in lunar volcanism, subsurface structure, and landing site characterization. His work has been instrumental in interpreting data from China’s Chang’E-3 mission, including the development of a three-dimensional geological model of the landing site in northern Mare Imbrium using lunar penetrating radar data from the Yutu rover. This model, published in 2017, provided critical insights into the shallow subsurface stratigraphy and volcanic history of the region. Qiao has also contributed to the study of enigmatic lunar features such as the Ina irregular mare patch, where his 2021 work evaluated competing models of ancient versus modern volcanism. His 2014 paper on the geological features and evolution of Sinus Iridum remains a foundational reference for understanding this key lunar region. With over 60 citations across his most-cited works, Qiao’s research has advanced our understanding of the Moon’s volcanic and impact history, and his integration of remote sensing and in-situ data continues to inform future exploration targets.
