About
L. David Sibley is a leading authority on the molecular and cellular biology of the apicomplexan parasite *Toxoplasma gondii*, a major cause of congenital and opportunistic infections. His research has fundamentally advanced our understanding of how *T. gondii* invades host cells, establishes chronic infection, and evades the immune system. A key contribution was the identification of small-molecule inhibitors of the parasite's nucleoside triphosphate hydrolase (NTPase), a novel enzyme critical for tachyzoite metabolism. In a landmark 2002 study, Sibley and his team screened approximately 150,000 compounds using a robotic assay, discovering five distinct inhibitor classes that block NTPase activity. This work, cited over 40 times, opened new avenues for developing targeted anti-parasitic therapies. Beyond this, Sibley is renowned for elucidating the mechanisms of gliding motility and host cell invasion, and his work on the parasite's dense granule proteins has reshaped our understanding of how *T. gondii* manipulates the host cell.
