About
Joseph A. Paydarfar is a surgeon-scientist advancing the frontiers of head and neck oncology through innovation in surgical training and image-guided technology. His research centers on two critical challenges: improving the identification of unknown primary head and neck carcinomas and enhancing the precision of transoral robotic surgery (TORS). In his most cited work, Paydarfar provided a rigorous analysis of lingual tonsillectomy’s diagnostic value for occult malignancies, establishing a more accurate benchmark for this challenging clinical scenario. He has also pioneered the development of tumor phantoms—realistic, imaging-compatible models for training residents and researching tissue characteristics in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. Recognizing the limitations of current metallic retractors, he designed an imaging-compatible oral retractor system that enables safe intraoperative CT and MRI during TORS.
