Dr. Jeong‐Heum Baek is a pioneering colorectal surgeon whose work has fundamentally shaped the modern surgical treatment of rectal cancer. His primary research focus is the advancement of minimally invasive techniques, specifically robotic-assisted total mesorectal excision (TME). Dr. Baek’s major contributions include demonstrating the safety, efficacy, and oncologic soundness of robotic TME, a complex procedure for removing rectal tumors. His landmark 2010 study, “Multicentric Study on Robotic Tumor-Specific Mesorectal Excision,” with 256 citations, provided crucial early evidence that robotic surgery could achieve excellent local control and survival outcomes.
