About
Dr. Jeeun Kang is a pioneering roboticist and biomedical engineer whose work is redefining the frontiers of autonomous surgery. Her research centers on developing intelligent robotic systems for complex soft-tissue procedures, with a particular focus on laparoscopic and microsurgical applications. Dr. Kang’s most significant contribution is the groundbreaking demonstration of fully autonomous robotic laparoscopic intestinal anastomosis, a landmark study published in 2022 that has already garnered over 340 citations. This work proved that a robot could independently perform intricate suturing and tissue manipulation, a feat previously thought to require a surgeon’s direct dexterity. She further advanced the field by designing a novel actuated suturing tool and integrating 3D endoscope guidance for autonomous suturing, as well as developing semi-autonomous systems for vaginal cuff closure using marker-enhanced imaging. Her innovative approach extends to ophthalmic surgery, where she created an OCT-guided robotic device for autonomous needle insertion in corneal transplants. By combining advanced imaging, path planning, and confidence-based control strategies, Dr. Kang is systematically dismantling the barriers to surgical autonomy, promising a future of safer, more consistent, and universally accessible high-precision surgery.
