About

Jean-Michel Foidart is a pioneering researcher in reproductive biology, angiogenesis, and extracellular matrix remodeling, with a career spanning over three decades. His work has fundamentally advanced our understanding of how matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) drive pathological neovascularization, particularly in ocular diseases. His highly cited 2002 study, "Matrix Metalloproteinase-9 Contributes to Choroidal Neovascularization" (121 citations), demonstrated that MMP-9 is a critical mediator of abnormal blood vessel growth in the choroid, a key mechanism in age-related macular degeneration.
