About
James N. McInnes is a pioneering glaciologist whose work has fundamentally advanced our understanding of subglacial processes and ice-ocean interactions at the margins of Antarctica. His primary research areas focus on grounding-line dynamics, basal debris transport, and the mechanisms controlling floating glacier terminus stability. McInnes’s most significant contribution came from deploying a robotic submarine to conduct the first-ever direct observations of a grounding-line area—the critical zone where a glacier lifts off its bed and begins to float. His landmark 1996 study at the Mackay Glacier in the Ross Sea (77°S) revealed that half of the 20-meter-thick basal debris layers are deposited as subglacial sediment at this boundary, fundamentally reshaping models of sediment transfer beneath ice sheets. This work, which has accumulated over 120 combined citations, provided the first empirical evidence for how debris is entrained and released at glacier termini.
