About

Irinel Popescu is a pioneering Romanian surgeon whose career has been defined by his groundbreaking contributions to minimally invasive and robotic-assisted surgery, with particular expertise in colorectal, hepatic, pancreatic, and esophageal procedures. Working primarily within a single high-volume center, Popescu has been instrumental in establishing robotic surgery as a viable and superior alternative to conventional laparoscopy in complex general surgical settings. His landmark 2009 paper documenting the first-year experience of 153 robotic-assisted cases — garnering 65 citations — established early evidence for the safety and feasibility of robotic programs in general surgery departments. His subsequent work on rectal cancer resection, including a landmark series of 100 consecutive robotic cases, helped define learning curves and best practices for a technically demanding field. Popescu has also advanced robotic hepatic and pancreatic surgery, reporting early cases of robotic left lateral hepatic segmentectomy and spleen-preserving distal pancreatectomy. More recently, his benchmark study on open major liver resection contributes important reference standards for the field. Collectively, his publications have accumulated over 200 citations, cementing his reputation as a visionary leader in the evolution of minimally invasive general surgery in Eastern Europe and beyond.
