About

H. Niebuhr is a leading figure in hernia surgery, best known for shaping global standards in the laparoscopic treatment of ventral and incisional abdominal wall hernias. As a key contributor to the International Endohernia Society (IEHS), Niebuhr co-authored the landmark update of the IEHS Guidelines—Part A (366 citations) and Part B (164 citations) in 2019. These comprehensive, evidence-based guidelines synthesize the best available diagnostic and therapeutic evidence, providing surgeons worldwide with clear, actionable recommendations to improve patient outcomes. By systematically updating the first international guidelines from 2014, Niebuhr’s work has directly influenced clinical practice, reduced variability in surgical approaches, and enhanced safety and efficacy in laparoscopic hernia repair. Earlier in their career, Niebuhr also pioneered the Image Tracking System, a novel technique for safer and more cost-effective laparoscopic surgery. With hundreds of citations and a lasting impact on surgical protocols, Niebuhr’s contributions continue to guide both experienced surgeons and trainees in the evolving field of abdominal wall surgery.
