About
F. Forget is a leading planetary scientist whose research focuses on the climate and surface evolution of Mars, with a particular emphasis on the planet’s water cycle and subsurface ice. In a landmark 2010 study, Forget and colleagues demonstrated that near-surface perennial water ice on Mars can exist at latitudes as low as 25° in the southern hemisphere—far closer to the equator than previously thought. This work, which has accumulated 94 citations, challenged existing models by showing that such ice could result from water vapor diffusion under current climatic conditions, not solely from ancient ice ages. The finding has profound implications for understanding Mars’s hydrological history and for identifying accessible water resources for future human exploration.
