About
Elroy Saldanha is a pioneering Indian robotic surgeon whose work is redefining minimally invasive oncologic surgery. His research centers on the technical optimization and safety of robotic platforms—specifically the da Vinci system—in complex colorectal and esophageal procedures. Saldanha’s major contributions include the first Indian prospective study on the da Vinci SureForm SmartFire stapler, where he analyzed 246 firings in colorectal cancer to reduce anastomotic leakage, a critical complication. He also advanced thoracic surgery by comparing ICG dye instillation methods (inguinal node vs. foot web space) to visualize the thoracic duct during robotic esophagectomy, aiming to prevent chyle leaks. His landmark paper on the learning curve in robotic rectal surgery, using CUSUM analysis in a high-volume Indian center, provides a roadmap for surgeons adopting this technology.
