Edward H. Phillips is a pioneering surgeon whose work has fundamentally shaped the management of complex hepatobiliary and endocrine surgical diseases. His most celebrated contribution is the advancement of minimally invasive biliary surgery, particularly through his seminal 2006 paper on laparoscopic transcystic duct common bile duct exploration, which has garnered 158 citations and remains a cornerstone technique for surgeons worldwide. This work established a safe, single-stage approach to choledocholithiasis, reducing the need for preoperative ERCP and its associated risks. More recently, Phillips has focused on the surgical treatment of adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC), a rare and aggressive malignancy. His research, including studies published in 2021 and 2022, has been instrumental in demonstrating that both operative approach and surgeon case volume significantly impact negative resection margins, while also providing the first robust evidence that systematic lymphadenectomy improves staging and outcomes in ACC.
