Dr. Daniela Caracciolo is a pioneering hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgeon whose work is redefining the limits of minimally invasive surgery for complex liver and biliary cancers. Her primary research focuses on the application of robotic techniques to traditionally open procedures, particularly for perihilar cholangiocarcinoma and major vascular resections. Her landmark 2023 paper on the robotic approach for perihilar cholangiocarcinoma—spanning Bismuth types I through vascular resection—has garnered 20 citations, establishing a new benchmark for technical feasibility in this challenging field. She has further advanced the field by demonstrating the safety and efficacy of robotic ALPPS (Associating Liver Partition and Portal vein ligation for Staged hepatectomy) for both primary and metastatic liver tumors, with early outcomes comparable to open surgery.
