Dan Suciu is a leading figure in database theory and systems, best known for his foundational work on querying semistructured data and probabilistic databases. His research bridges the gap between data management and complexity theory, with major contributions to XML query languages, data exchange, and managing uncertain data. Suciu’s seminal paper “Querying XML Data” (1999), with over 650 citations, helped define how tree-structured data could be queried efficiently, shaping the development of XPath and XQuery. He later pioneered work on probabilistic databases, introducing techniques to compute query answers over uncertain or incomplete data, which has been influential in data integration and scientific data management.
