About
Biying Wu-Ouyang is a leading scholar at the intersection of human-machine communication, cultural studies, and emerging technologies. Her research explores how artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and anime culture converge to reshape human-robot interaction, particularly through non-naturalistic and stylized forms of anthropomorphism. In her highly cited 2022 case study on the hologram social robot “Hupo,” she demonstrated how the fusion of these “3A” elements creates a unique “soul” that resonates with users, bridging technical innovation with cultural meaning-making. This work has garnered 25 citations and established her as a key voice in understanding how pop culture aesthetics influence user acceptance of social robots. Wu-Ouyang’s contributions extend beyond technical design to interrogate the social and emotional implications of stylized AI, offering fresh perspectives for students and researchers in HCI, robotics, and media studies. Her interdisciplinary approach continues to shape how we think about the future of relational AI and the cultural contexts that give it life.
