About
Anup Sunil Tamhankar is a pioneering robotic surgeon whose work has significantly advanced minimally invasive oncology in India. His research centers on the application of the da Vinci Xi robotic system for complex cancer resections, particularly in colorectal and hepatobiliary surgery. Tamhankar’s major contribution lies in standardizing and demonstrating the feasibility of advanced robotic techniques in resource-constrained settings. His landmark 2016 study on total robotic radical rectal resection introduced a single-docking, single-phase technique using the da Vinci Xi system, proving its advantages over traditional laparoscopy for rectal cancer. This work, cited 21 times, established a reproducible protocol that reduces operative time and improves ergonomics. In 2017, he extended this expertise to hepatobiliary oncology, publishing the first Indian experience with the Xi system for liver and biliary tract resections (17 citations), demonstrating its safety and oncological efficacy.
