About
Amy Egerter is a leading research engineer at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), whose work is central to decarbonizing the U.S. building stock. Her primary research focuses on building stock characterization, energy efficiency, and the development of scalable strategies for reducing carbon emissions from the built environment. Egerter’s most significant contribution is the creation of a national building typology, a comprehensive framework that categorizes the diverse U.S. building stock to guide targeted decarbonization efforts. This work, published in two highly cited reports (2021 and 2022, with 19 and 15 citations respectively), was developed in support of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Building Construction (ABC) Collaborative. By providing a systematic way to analyze and prioritize retrofits, her typology has become a foundational tool for policymakers, researchers, and industry stakeholders aiming to accelerate building decarbonization. Egerter’s research is notable for its practical impact, bridging the gap between high-level climate goals and actionable, data-driven solutions. Her achievements underscore her role as a key figure in the transition to a sustainable, low-carbon building sector.
