About
Abhay S. Gokhale is a leading radiation oncologist whose work has significantly advanced the precision and efficacy of stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), particularly for thoracic malignancies. His research focuses on integrating advanced imaging, such as PET/CT, into treatment planning to improve tumor targeting and reduce toxicity. His seminal 2008 paper on fractionated SBRT for primary, recurrent, and metastatic lung tumors, which has garnered 85 citations, demonstrated the critical role of PET/CT-based planning in enhancing local control and minimizing radiation exposure to healthy tissue. This work helped establish SBRT as a standard option for inoperable lung cancer patients. Beyond this, Gokhale has contributed to optimizing dose fractionation and exploring SBRT’s utility in challenging clinical scenarios, including recurrent disease. His impact is reflected in the widespread adoption of his imaging-guided approaches, which have improved outcomes for countless patients. A dedicated clinician-scientist, Gokhale continues to refine radiation techniques, bridging the gap between technological innovation and patient-centered care.
