摘要
Background: The thoracic surgery team of Shanghai Chest Hospital has been publishing its annual report since 2018, summarizing the services and major progress over the last year. Methods: All patients receiving thoracic surgery service in 2021 at the Department of Thoracic Surgery and Department of Oncological Surgery of Shanghai Chest Hospital were enrolled. Number of surgical resections, types of surgical procedures, histological types of the diseases, and perioperative outcomes were collected and compared with the results from previous years. Results: In 2021, the number of thoracic surgeries exceeded 20,000 cases per year for the first time, with a total of 20,405 patients receiving thoracic surgeries at Shanghai Chest Hospital. These included 17,829 pulmonary procedures, 1,113 esophageal procedures, 1,077 mediastinal procedures, 83 tracheal procedures, 76 chest wall procedures, 18 lung transplantations and 209 other procedures. Percentage of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) was up to 92.7%, with 1,006 robotic-assisted thoracic surgeries, reaching a historically high number from a single institution. Surgical volume of pulmonary surgery was increased by 32.1%, with 96.3% patients receiving minimally invasive surgeries. Volume of sublobar resections exceeded over 10,000 cases, including 6,255 cases of segmentectomy, which was increased by 4.4 times than that in 2019. Average length of hospital stays (LOS) continually decreased, with an in-hospital mortality as low as 0.06%. Conclusions: The services provided and progress made in 2021 by the thoracic surgery team of Shanghai Chest Hospital were reviewed in this annual report, reflecting our constant effort to help our patients with high-standard services and state-of-the-art techniques.
