摘要
MILLER'S ANESTHESIA-2-VOLUME SET, 6TH EDITION Editor: Ronald D. Miller, MD Bibliographic Data: Elsevier, 2005. Imprint: Churchill Livingstone Inc., ISBN: 0-443-06618-3, 3205 pp, hard cover, $289.00. Reviewer's Expert Opinion: Description: In this edition of Miller's Anesthesia, the authors and editors provide an extraordinarily complete and thorough analysis and presentation of virtually every aspect of the medical specialty of anesthesiology; this is a complete revision of the fifth edition from 2000. Purpose: The sixth edition was designed to retain all the strengths of the fifth edition, in addition to responding to a multitude of new and challenging aspects of our specialty. All contributing authors were instructed to revise their chapters in a manner that ensured contemporary treatment of the subject. The editors and authors have clearly achieved this goal, as all previously existing chapters have been fully revised and updated, with many chapters including new author teams. This approach facilitates the offering of contemporary information in both a thorough and clinically relevant fashion. Several new chapters were added, including chapters on implantable cardiac pulse generators; civil, chemical, and biological warfare; anesthesia for robotic surgery; perioperative blindness; contemporary and alternative therapies; finding information on the Internet; and human performance and patient safety. Audience: This book serves as a comprehensive foundation for trainees in the medical specialty of anesthesiology and as a user friendly, but extraordinarily thorough, resource for experienced anesthesiologists. Features: This is the most all-inclusive and detailed analysis and presentation in textbook form of the medical specialty of anesthesiology. The collective background and expertise of the 154 contributors makes them extraordinarily well qualified to serve as authorities in the specialty. The book is divided into six sections, including an introduction, a section on scientific principles, anesthetic management, subspecialty management, critical care medicine, and ancillary responsibilities and problems. Additionally, a CD-ROM with video segments that accompanies the book is intended to provide a verbal and visual description of some of the more technically demanding procedures. In this edition, new videos include segments on patient positioning, code blue simulation, fast-trach intubation, thoracic epidural, ultrasound-guided nerve blocks, ultrasound-guided peripheral venous axis, and needle cricothyrotomy. Assessment: The sixth edition of this book clearly justifies replacing the previous edition, as it has expanded its scope of coverage considerably. Several chapters have been rewritten in their entirety, while others have been extensively revised, often by a new set of authors. This book will be an invaluable addition to the library of any anesthesiologist. Reviewer: Jeffrey L. Apfelbaum, MD University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine
