The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to the networked ecosystem of physical devices — sensors, actuators, machines, and everyday objects — embedded with computing hardware and communication capabilities that allow them to collect, exchange, and act on data without direct human intervention. Each device is uniquely addressable and connects through standard internet or wireless protocols, enabling seamless data flow across distributed systems. In robotics and AI, IoT serves as a foundational infrastructure: robots and autonomous systems leverage IoT networks to access real-time environmental data, coordinate with other machines, and integrate with cloud or edge computing platforms for processing and decision-making. Applications span smart manufacturing, precision agriculture, healthcare monitoring, smart cities, and robotic skin sensing. The emergence of the Internet of Robotic Things — where robots both consume and contribute to IoT data streams — further amplifies autonomous capabilities. IoT matters because it transforms isolated machines into collaborative, data-rich systems, enabling scalable automation, predictive maintenance, and adaptive intelligence that underpin Industry 4.0 and next-generation AI-driven environments.
